It's definitely not what I'd call an "always on" pedal, but there are times when you want something that's going to swell into each note. I'd usually use it for a sound with long delay/reverb tails. The thing that takes a bit of getting used to is that you need to leave a little space on the tail of the note if you want the next one to
also swell in -- on a series of notes without a rest, you'll only get the swell for the first note, and hear the attack (pick, pluck, hammer-on, pull-off...) on each following note.
I'm more likely to use a volume pedal between the gain pedals and the time-based pedals if I'm doing some kind of Frippertronics-style thing, so that the amount of saturation is determined by the guitar volume and the attack, rather than the Slow Gear/Lazy Sprocket/Darth Fader at the start of the chain. It's worth experimenting with, as it'll probably push you to play differently, and that doesn't hurt when you're looking for inspiration.
