Having cloned a U87 and recently a KM84, I'm taking the plunge. Ordered up everything to build an AKG C12 or it's variant, the Telefunken ELA M 251 and it's power supply. Sprung for the Heiserman HK12 capsule too. https://heisermanaudio.com/products/hk12-capsule. I'll be building up both circuits, the C12 being Matador's boards https://store.studio939.com/product/c12 ... ne-pcb-set and ELA M 251 being Poctop's boards http://www.vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com/D-251.html This could actually turn into 2 projects...or not. Alcatron Body kit with power supply and shock mount. (gets gutted, save most of the hardware), https://store.studio939.com/product/alc ... microphone Went for the better gotham cable, too. https://store.studio939.com/product/gotham-gac-7-cable There was an ELA M 251 on ebay for 25,000.00 so the way I see it, I'm saving 24,000.00 dollars. This is the last project for a while...but I am ready for the challenge, and here is the best place to share the sickness...err, enthusiasm. :) Will use it for recording, and broadcasting.

I'll be watching this thread for updates! Mic builds are really fun and tempting, but they're the least practical for me. So I will enjoy this vicariously. :mrgreen:

As of now, not dialed in. The power supply (had to gut the Chinese orig and replace with full wave rectification) is functioning fine but the B+ is 170v with the mic plugged in. Can't wait to get it straightened out. BTW, should anyone attempt this build using Poctop's (Dany's) boards, I have a ton of these Russian Military PIO .47uf's, the desired cap. ;)

You guys are gonna shame me into finishing this. Thanks for the kind words. I've just started soldering again (the 3 surgeries leave me stiff, still, in my hand) Eric, and anyone who wants to do this build, I had to buy 16 x .47uf Russian PIO's (that the board was made to fit) if you need...contact me.

Ok...we have signal. Unfortunately, it's noisy, and I believe this to be from the tube. Bad news is, you need a 6072 (quiet version of the 12ay7), and they ain't cheap. I have one on the way, hope it's a good one. No way to know till the moment of truth. Here's a quick vocal test; https://www.dropbox.com/s/0po1gzyj891or ... 8.m4a?dl=0

Finally came to fruition. Had a problem and it was a lot like me. 2 screws were loose on the capsule. :shock: Here's a quick clip I sent to my engineer buddy for his blessings, so nice to have this mic around in the arsenal;

Thanks Scott. Very smooth high end, and few transient spikes like a U87. I suspect due to tube and it's compression.
