Just did a completed listing search on ebay, and a couple have sold in the $450 area. Vintage muff is serious business.

hmm, this makes me re-evaluate my idea of modding it. theres no harm in putting a boost in a second enclosure. I think i'll go with the pots pointed out by morgan. i'm still putting a 9v jack on it regardless of what anyone says

I was thinking about how I'd handle this if I were going to restore it, and I would probably end going with one of these and just snake it through the gap in the enclosure (jokes!):

Or you could just make one with a longer lead, but for $3 I'd probably just buy it.

But I don't think adding a power jack is going to significantly hurt the value.

I think the original ones were the CTS pots with plastic splined shafts. I've seen those exact ones somewhere before...

Close, but not PCB mount: Image

You might look around for a bit to see if you can locate the right brand. I've seen the right pointer knobs in the past too; just can't find them at the moment.

I think this is the one Morgan is talking about:

or here:

thanks for all the input guys. If i didn't ask i would have ended up buying some generic pots off jameco. I'm also rebuilding a gibson l6-s, i will get your opinons on that when the time comes.

Not quite; you want them in the long pin pcb mount, like the Alpha's a SBE. I know I've seen them around, just can't find them today. I think I'd stick with the proper pc mount pots instead of adding wire to the pedal. these things use the pots as a mounting point.

This thing has the 2N5133 button top transistors, which by what i am seeing is slightly more rare. I'm definitely not gonna start drilling holes. you may all rest. I will do a proper restoration. Its a damn shame i stepped on the knobs 15 years ago.

You can say that again. Those are the holy-magic-mother-of-mojo transistors for the Muff circuit.

I hear that some people will even punch babies to get ahold of a Muff that has those in it.

I am striking out trying got find pcb mount cts pots. What are the chances i can use the shaft from a lugged pot? You guys think the molds are still the same after all these years?

I don't understand; what do you mean use the shaft from a lugged pot? Use the shaft for what?

You can turn any solder lug pot into a PCB mount pot with some cast-off component leads. Stephen has a great pic (which is where i got the idea) in the 'tips for a successful build' thread.

take the shaft out of a new lugged pot, and put it in the housing of the original pcb pot.
if all else fails i'll do what tonedeaf suggests, or use non cts pots

I was actually thinking about this. Like, a wiper transplant or something.

Or you could really be cheeky and call it a shaft swap.

shaft swap successful. nice to know the pots are still the same after all these years. wasn't hard at all, way less fragile inside than i thought.

In all my (okay, five) years of DIY effects, I've not seen anyone dissect a pot and build it stronger than before. Potentiometer surgery for the win!

its still in surgery, putting the 9v jack in as soon as i get someone here at the shop to watch the front. i removed the power switch and am installing the jack there as to cause as little disruption to its oringinal intergrity as possible. I have practice tonight, so i'll have a chance to hook it and see if it still works.
