Hello all,

Quick question for my first build. I have sanded, cleaned and primed the bare enclosure. Now I am ready for the top coat.

How many top coats would you recommend with wait time between each? When it comes time draw the decal on, I was thinking I could paint pen or Sharpie it, wait a 5-7 days and clear coat. Would that end in a train wreck? Or should I mask it and spray the image on with black enamel, then wait and clear coat. Not so sure my masking skills are good enough...

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well that didn't work. Tried to mask the image so I could spray the black and ended up with a jacked up top coat when it failed to mask cleanly. I've now re-sprayed the base coat and will try a decal next, and if that doesn't look good I'm just going to free hand it before putting the clear coat on.

I'd definitely use a waterslide decal for that job. Lots of useful info here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8896

More info on sources for decal stock, etc. here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=28179

Thanks for the tip. With this being my first build, I've almost invested the cost of the pedal itself in tools and supplies (I didn't have any to start with).

With that said, at almost $200 now, I have to keep this first build in check. If I wanted to hand draw the image on, would a Sharpie cause any issue with bonding or clear coating? Or do I need a paint pen?

Now that I own all the tools to get started, I think I will try a water slide on build #2

I'm pretty sure that the clearcoat would cause a Sharpie graphic to run. I'd go with the paint pen....

I can confirm that. It doesn't run like watercolors in the rain, but badly enough to ruin that illustration you've got.

Paint pens are great. I used a couple last night on a build and cleared over them no problem. Depending on the various brands/types of paint I have noticed the occasional run or buckling when applying a paint pen over a spray coat, but it's been rare and usually when experimenting with new brands.

Sounds like you need to build more pedals to recoup your losses.

The pen did work pretty well. I sprayed a secondary color on top of the paint pen design, and then several clear coats on top of that, effectively trapping what little buildup there was underneath. For my first design, I'm ok with how it turned out. After about 2 weeks, I should be ready to put together the insides tonight. I'll post pictures soon if the build is a success. Thanks so much for all the tips and pointers.

My thoughts exactly! I think I'll try a fuzz next.
