I think maybe the most famous DIY guy is Leo Fender. Back in the 1940s, Leo used to repair and tinker with RCA radios and this gave him a lot of experience with wiring, capacitors, resistors and stuff. He then went on to develop other electronics like guitar amps and related stuff. Also, before he died, he was tinkering with guitar pick ups in his office and was probably trying to come up with new ideas. So maybe Leo Fender is the most famous DIY guy (at least in the guitar world).

Les Paul or maybe Seth Lover in my opinion as far as music industry pioneering.

Joe Walsh builds some of his own amps.

Tom Schlotz from Boston invented some gear too.

Who else?

Brian May of Queen designed and built his iconic guitar with his father. Plus, he's also a Ph.D. astrophysicist, so that's something.

Personally, I wouldn't include Fender or Lover, since they were music gear professionals.

My vote would be Les Paul, for his gear and recording innovations while he was first & foremost a performer.

Isn't EVH the reason we have so many super strats? That guitar would be pretty high on the list. I can't think of any hacked together guitars that are as famous or influential.
