Hey pals,

I'm probably going to be adding a buffer to a friend's Ernie Ball VP Jr. I'm sure it's not super complicated, but I can't seem to find any video demos on YouTube. Anyone who has does this: do you have any pointers or things to watch out for? I've never actually opened up a VPJR before, so I don't know what to expect.

I haven't done it either. But I would advise to try and have him actually place a buffer in his chain before the volume pedal (same as actually putting the circuit in the VP) to see if it does anything first. I've done this on a couple of my boards and on a friend's board. Turns out it doesn't always do very much...

This was exactly my first impression, as well. The effectiveness of a buffer is highly dependent on what all is in the signal chain.

That said, for $27, your friend could put one of these at the beginning of his pedal chain: https://www.amazon.com/ammoon-Clean-Buf ... B01JA2WMAY

Or if you're committed to the DIY route, Stephen used to make and sell small always-on buffers that work like a charm. I'm pretty sure he'd provide you with the documentation to make one, if you ask him. They're certainly not complicated.

Good thoughts, gents. We'll definitely be putting the buffer into the chain before prepping for surgery. :D I have a Klong buffer from 1776 that we can try, and I actually have a handful of toggle-switched PCB versions of Stephen's micro-buffer that Frag helped me make.

Rej and I did it back in 2012, images are long gone though :(

But to second everyone else, try a buffer pedal first.

Related, I have a simple buffer PCB with 2 outputs if you want to add a tuner out.
