Build Your Own Clone Message Board

...at least until Keith qualifies a new transformer vendor for the TMB18! The kit arrived yesterday, and I have the hardware mounted, the power & transformers wired in, the output jacks & impedance selector connected, and the heater wires run to the tube sockets. The rectifier socket is all wired up and the two EL84 sockets are well underway. The pots and input jacks are next up, followed by populating the turret board. The head cab looks GREAT, but you'll have to wait a while to see that....

Done! And it fired up the first time, no problems. Haven't put it through its paces yet, since my mother-in-law is staying with us overnight and had already gone to bed when I finished it. But we'll get it properly cranked up tomorrow. Here are some pics. Keith did a super job on the cabinet!

Hey DVM, if memory serves, you also built the Brit 50.

How would you rate the difference in build difficulty between the two, if there is one?

Your memory is correct--I've built a couple of Brit50's. Very similar build to the 18W, nothing new or more difficult. The main thing I would mention is that the chassis is a bit more unwieldy to handle once the transformers are mounted, due to their significantly greater weight.

Unless you've located an unsold or unbuilt Brit50 kit somewhere, you won't see this or other BYOC amp kits back in stock for a while. BYOC's transformer supplier (Classic Tone) recently went out of business, so Keith has to qualify another supplier and (very likely) redo a LOT of the diagrams in the instructions to match the wire color coding of the new trannies.
