We all have "Local" places, or a web address where we source supplies. I thought that this would be a good sticky, so let me kick it off by recommending, http://www.allelectronics.com . I live close to them, and find myself there often. Another that I live near is http://www.electroniccity.com . Nice websites on both. Now if I can remember how to make a sticky.

When I'm in a pinch for enclosures, strip board, or lots of other stuff, I can usually find it at Fry's Electronics.

Only as a last resort though - some stuff is pricy!

FRY's is really hit or miss weather or not they have stuff in stock. Their OC store has about 1/3 of the resistor and capacitor section stocked for example.

So the Santa Ana store is a good link... anyone know of something closer to the LBC. :)

Here's an online source for parts, mostly amp, some pedal...lots of Mallory stuff, all NOS, great prices, and a great seller. http://www.ampbuildersparts.com

They have really cheap parts and have all the IC's you'll ever need. Shipping wasn't a problem for me as it came in a week. Oh and did I mention shipping is $4 flat?

I hope their international fares are as good as that!
For my next build, I'll get all my pots there. 16mm alpha pots cost 0.5$ each!!! I almost paid 3x times that for mines!

A specialized shop for those of us in the other side of the sea; http://www.banzaieffects.com/
This German-based shop has everything you can think of to build a stompbox. From the tiniiest components, to the weirdest tools. There's a lot of stuff to make amps (very large tube selection) and some guitar hardware.
Regarding their prices, most are quite good. I made a small comparison of it against Smallbear and my local electronics shop (which makes me a 30% discount on most things) and it scored very well, with some of the prices even below those of the local shop. But, you often come across some things that, for an unknown reason, are a bit more (or A LOT) expensive. In those cases, just buy those itmes in other shops, if the shipping is worth.

If you are in the Salt Lake City area, try Ra-Elco at 2780 S Main St. There probably aren't many of us in the Salt Lake City area, and those who are probably already know about this place. They have a lot of the components you might need from enclosures to every type of cap, led, resistor etc. The help ranges from nice and helpful through completely apathetic to downright rude, but they know their stuff. It's kinda the anti-Radio Shack, only still with some of the rudeness.

I believe there's the last remaining MarVac in Costa Mesa. They have a fair amount of electronics.

Also in The Valley is LC Electronics. Van Nuys to be exact. Run by a lovably crazy Korean fellow named Han. He's almost worth the visit on his own.

As we're not all blessed with Mouser or Smallbear, here's a few UK suppliers ...

Maplin ... http://www.maplin.co.uk ... sucks ass, unless you want an R/C Car or are really desperate ... (They didn't suck 25 years ago, but they sure as Hell do now).

RSH ... http://www.rshelectronics.co.uk/ ... very quick delivery (free with orders over £25), easy site to navigate and find the right parts. (3PDT's for under a fiver)

Bluebell Audio .... http://www.bluebellaudio.com ... nice supply of most pots.

Bitsbox ... http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/

Rapid ... http://www.rapidonline.com/

The Little Black Box Shop ... http://www.little-black-box.co.uk ... for 4PDT footswitches (should you need one) and Sprague Orange Drops.

RS (Radiospares to those of a certain age) ... http://uk.rs-online.com/web/ ... Edit, these now suck, it's official

eBay has been invaluable source for copper-clad and FeCl3 pellets.

Money saving tip follows ...
Nu Tech Engineering ... http://www.nutech-eng.com ... shoot them an email, ask for a sample of their extruded aluminium enclosure. You'll get a nice enclosure, with the end-covers and screws absolutely free.

I still can't find a UK supplier for C100k pots (Finland was the closest I got) or 42TM018 or 42TL218 transformers though. Please please please feel free to correct me on this a.s.a.p. :D

Just found Das Musikding ... http://www.musikding.de/

Very reasonable p&p, calculated by weight, and not rarity of component

What about Ohio? The southeastern part. No one around here knows what effects pedals are, let alone have too many places to buy components. Radioshack is really the only thing I know of... The closest real store is Guitar Center and Sam Ash, an hour and a half drive.

Never mind..............I found a local store, private owned, that has NOS tubes, new tubes, amps, a few effects, mics, cables, and many different components. So if you have something specific, I can check for you guys. I think he can get many things in too. He's got jacks, 3PDTs, enclosures, knobs, wire, resistors, diodes, ICs, IC Sockets, caps, etc... So just let me know and I can talk to him. I will respond as quickly as possible, just PM me.

Hi,

I'm new to this but I did the Monte Allums mod to my SD-1 and I think I'm hooked.

I'm in the San Diego area and there's a local electronics store that looks like a huge junkyard for electronic parts. Very cool but I'm wondering if it's a good place to get parts for building pedals.

So my question is...

Is there a large variation in the level of quality in electronic parts or is one resistor as good as the next? Is it ok to be shopping in the electronic ghettos or should I only trust Small Bear to keep the sound of my precious pedals boutique-y and sweet?

Thanks,

5

In my experience (and it's over decades but I'm no cork-sniffer tone-snob), it will depend on where & how you use your effects.

If you do exclusively studio work with Uber Quiet environments your components will make a huge difference in the quality and voice of your stuff.

If you gig in bars with neon beer lights buzzing away 3 feet behind your amp, house wiring that hasn't been upgraded since your Dad was born and a room full of drunks yelling as loud as the band, any resistor will sound exactly as good as the next one at the same measured value.

YMMV. Most people will be somewhere between these two extremes with most of my experience being a little more (OK, a lot more) toward the second scenario.

What I like about electronics graveyards is the variety of sweet goodies like weird knobs, switches and enclosures. Stuff you could never find anywhere else in 12 years of searching. Sometimes I bid on electronic junk on ebay just for the knobs and switches. It's double bonus if it looks like crap and nobody else bids on it so I get it cheap! I scored this just about 2 weeks ago for $19:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0273934608

I got a bunch of SWEET vintage USA made tubes and a TON of awesome knobs that will go on every effect I gig with. I already get someone at almost every gig doing the "WTF" look at my pedal board. With some of these controls on them, it's only going to get farther out there. 8)

BTW, these goofy things were crammed FULL of 1960 vintage Allen Bradley pots of every value you could think of with not a single solder snot on the cases of them anywhere. I wonder what those would be worth to some of the vintage LP guys who pay $300+ for a single bumble bee cap of the correct date? I'm guessing more than $19.

Cheers,
- JJ
